Aglianico

The Aglianico is the only one of our four rooms with a private balcony. It is the one real difference between them, and for many guests it is what decides the choice.

The grape

Aglianico is Campania's great red, and one of Italy's most important. In Irpinia, on the hills around Taurasi, it makes a wine many call the Barolo of the South: tannic, austere when young, able to age for decades.

It has one quality that sets it apart among Italian grapes: it ripens extremely late. It is picked between the end of October and November, when every other variety has been in the cellar for weeks and the fog has already settled on the hills. It is a grape that makes you wait, and repays the waiting.

It seemed the right name for the most generous of the four rooms.

The room

Twenty square metres, a double bed, contemporary furnishings with clean lines and good natural light.

Fittings: air conditioning, Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, fridge, safe, desk, wardrobe and a kettle for tea and coffee. The bathroom is private en-suite, with shower, bidet, hairdryer and toiletries.

The balcony

This is what the other three do not have. It is not a panoramic terrace, and we are not going to tell you there is a sea view: it is a town balcony, looking over central Sorrento.

What it gives you is practical: somewhere to have breakfast in the open without going downstairs, somewhere to read in the evening when the air cools, somewhere to hang a swimsuit after a day on Capri. Guests who have stayed in it almost always mention it.

Who it suits

Anyone who wants a piece of open air of their own without giving up a position in the centre of Sorrento, two minutes from the station.

If the balcony does not matter to you, know that the other three rooms are identical in space and fittings: you are giving up nothing by choosing one of them, and we would rather say so beforehand than after.
