Positano is the most photographed village on the coast, with its painted houses clinging to the cliff, the beach at its feet, and the maiolica dome of Santa Maria Assunta.
From Sorrento it's 40 minutes by car on the SS163 coastal road, or by boat from Marina Piccola. The old town is entirely pedestrian and built on stairs — the walk is beautiful but tiring in the hot hours.
Late afternoon is the best time, once the sun starts dropping and the coach buses leave. Dinner on one of the terraces above the beach makes the trip worth it.
